A Little More About Wheel Alignment
As stated, wheel alignment deals with the major suspension angles. Those are camber, caster, toe, and thrust. Each is a specific measurement that impacts the relationship of the wheels to one another and to the body of the vehicle. These relationships are critically important. They affect how well you can handle and control your car in several key ways. First, the better the alignment, the more contact your wheels/tires make with the road’s surface. Obviously, if your tires aren’t connecting with the pavement well, your traction is compromised, and your risk of a skid or crash is increased. Second, when your tires are losing that all-important contact with the driving surface or if your automobile is pulling to one side or difficult to steer, you have less control over where your car goes and/or how quickly you can take evasive action in an emergency. If your wheel alignment is off, you may notice several early warning signs. In addition to the mentioned pulling and control issues, you will likely observe uneven tire wear. Specifically, the tread will show more wear in some spots than others, a result of the intermittent contact with the road. Left unaddressed, the problem progresses to the point that other suspension components sustain damage from the undue stress placed upon them. For instance, the ball joints, bearings, bushings, etc. will become strained and may need replacing sooner than expected. The condition may put your shocks or struts in a bind, as well, causing their lifespans to be shortened.
